VIDEO: Patti Davis and Nancy Reagan Finally Make Up

Patti Davis, daughter of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, was on with Leslie Stahl this morning on CBS Sunday Morning talking about her relationship with her mother Nancy Reagan. Stahl also has Nancy on the phone during the interview. Here's more information from CBS.com:

The strained relationship between Patti Davis and her parents, former President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan, has been well documented.

"There was definitely more fire between me and my mother. I was never angry at my father. I was angry at his job choice," Davis tells correspondent Lesley Stahl on CBS Sunday Morning, anchored by Charles Osgood, March 29 at 9 a.m. ET.

Stahl speaks with Davis and her mother who, after decades of feuding, say they are now closer and that their relationship continues to improve after a heartfelt apology Davis made. "I said, 'I know I've caused you pain. It was never my intention to do so…But I know I did and I want you to know I'm sorry,'" Davis recounts.

Now the two speak every day, but the always-candid Davis says, "[It's] not like a Hallmark card. It wasn't suddenly everything is just fine and pink and rosy. It's not like there are never moments of pushing buttons."

ODD NEWS: Bobcat Bites Two People In A Bar In Arizona

Here's a story you don't hear every day. Apparently, a bobcat in Arizona wanted a drink and decided to drop into the nearest bar to get one. According to NYDailyNews.com:

A bobcat has attacked three people in the central Arizona community of Cottonwood, including two men who were bitten by the animal after it wandered inside a bar.

Officers called to the Chapparal Bar arrived to find the bobcat in the parking lot, where they shot and killed it.

Tests were ordered to determine if the animal was rabid. It wasn't clear how seriously the victims had been wounded.

Cottonwood police say the animal attacked Monday when it scratched a woman who thought she had hit it with her car. Then police got a report of a bobcat acting aggressively toward a woman outside a Pizza Hut.

About 11 p.m. came the call from the bar that a bobcat was inside as patrons climbed atop bar stools to get away.

Would You Like To Potty Train Your Child In Just Three Days?

I'm not sure if this works since I just heard about it, but if it does, I'm sure there are parents everywhere who would jump all over this. Here's the scoop from NJ.com:

The latest fad in toddlerdom is the 3 day potty training method. Has anyone ever tried it? And why the big rush to potty train in 3 days?

Basically, 3 day potty training means letting your child run around without diapers over a long weekend until they realize that sitting on the potty is much more pleasant than letting it go on the carpet. After that, the kid should go bare-bottemed in the house for three months.

Some e-books have caught on that recommend this approach. One of them even has a potty training "insurance policy'' and a "help desk'' where you can log on and get advice about your particular waste management issue.

The whole thing sounds like an extension of the one-day potty training method popular in the 1980s, when daycares were more likely to only accept potty-trained children and parents panicked and tried to get the job done ASAP.

Have you tried this method? Did it work?

Dylan Ratigan Tells CNBC To Take This Job And Shove It...

...well, those weren't his exact words, but as you can see from this article from NYPost.com, that's exactly what he meant:

There was high drama at CNBC yesterday as "Fast Money" anchor Dylan Ratigan quit -- sources say today will be his last day on-air -- and an insider is blaming his battles with network big Susan Krakower.

Krakower -- the VP for strategic programming and development who co-created "Fast Money" with Ratigan -- "is partially responsible for this. She's been ignoring him for months and he couldn't get the attention he deserved," the insider said.

Page Six heard a tape of highly volatile Ratigan, who also co-anchors "The Call" and "Closing Bell," ranting to a producer at a commercial break last summer: "Don't ask me to talk about every [bleep]ing e-mail that comes up on the screen. I'm not going to host a [bleep]ing TV show that consists of reading [bleep]ing e-mails to [bleep]ing traders." He then accuses Krakower of never addressing his concerns in private. "You know what, Susan, I'm in the middle of hosting a show right now, so now is an unwelcome time to hear your voice . . . If you want to pull me off the show, please do," he roars. "[You are] rude and disrespectful. . . . You lie to me routinely.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: President Obama's Doubt Is Motivating The Arizona Wildcats

Last week, I featured video of President Obama filling out his NCAA tournament bracket. If you didn't see it, go here to watch it now. In the video, he disses Arizona pretty badly. It looks like his slight has inspired the Wildcats, whom many thought shouldn't have even made it into the dance, to new heights for a mediocre team.

They advanced to the sweet sixteen yesterday after beating Cleveland State. They are the only team not seeded in the top five in their region to advance to the sweet sixteen (Arizona is a 12 seed). It looks like the spirit of McCain won't stop haunting Obama...

No Doubt About It... Alaska's Mount Redoubt Erupts Four Times

If you live near Mount Redoubt in Alaska, you've probably been awake for quite some time now as the old volcano has decided to shower you with a little bit of it's dust. According to this article on FoxNews.com, she started erupting late last night and early this morning:

Alaska's Mt. Redoubt volcano erupted late Monday and early Tuesday in "four large explosions," sending an ash plume an estimated 50,000 feet into the air, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported.

"The ash cloud went to 50,000 feet, and it's currently drifting toward the north, northeast," said Janet Schaefer, a geologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Geologists at the observatory say the volcano, located 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, erupted four times, from 10:30 p.m. to 1:40 a.m. local time.

"This is a fairly large eruption, close to the larger cities in Alaska," Geophysicist John Power said. He said nearby cities have not yet reported ash fall from the volcano, but noted that it's still early.

VIDEO: President Obama's Full Interview On The Tonight Show With Jay Leno - Good Idea Or Over-Exposed?

If you missed President Obama on Leno the other night, here is the complete interview in one video. I'm curious... Do you think Obama is over-exposed? While this is a cool video, and it's neat to see him on the show, at this point in his presidency and with the state of the economy, do you think it's a good thing to be doing shows like this?

PHOTO: Spectacular Underwater Volcanic Eruptions Off Coast of Tonga

An undersea volcano erupted off the coast of Tonga about six miles from the southwest coast of Tonga's main island Tongatapu. In this same area, there are up to 36 undersea volcanoes clustered together. According to this article from the A.P.:

Authorities said Thursday the eruption does not pose any danger to islanders at this stage, and there have been no reports of fish or other animals being affected.

Spectacular columns are spewing out of the sea about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from the southwest coast off the main island of Tongatapu — an area where up to 36 undersea volcanoes are clustered, geologists said.

Trade winds continued to blow gas and steam away from the island Thursday.

Tonga's police deputy commander Taniela Faletau said coastal villages close to the roiling ocean site were not yet at risk and that no warnings had been issued.

VIDEO: President Obama Disses Arizona And Picks UNC To Win NCAA Basketball Tourney

Have you filled out your bracket yet? If you haven't, maybe you can get some tips from President Obama. Watch as Obama fills out his bracket and disses the Arizona Wildcats and picks Louisville/UNC in the championship game and has UNC winning it all. He even calls UNC out at the end. He also mentions that he'll try and catch as much of the tourney as he can while he's at the NATO Summit. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. It's interesting to watch him fill out the bracket. He's not just picking teams at random. He actually knows what he's talking about.

Laura Ingraham Calls Meghan McCain a Useful Idiot and A Plus-Sized Model

Senator John McCain's daughter Meghan McCain, who writes for the blog The Daily Beast is being called a "Useful Idiot" and a "Plus-Sized Model" by conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. Here's more about this war of words from CNN.com:

Laura Ingraham is calling Meghan McCain a "useful idiot" and a "flavor of the month" — the latest salvo in the war of words between the conservative radio host and the daughter of former Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

"Memo to Meghan McCain: Enjoy the media coverage while it lasts, but know you're being used," writes Ingraham, in a blog post titled "'USEFUL IDIOT' WATCH." "You are the flavor of the month in left-wing media land because you are a Republican bashing the GOP. Likewise, your dad is most popular among the same people when he is slamming his Republican brethren in full-blown 'maverick' fashion. At least he backs up his views with a lifetime of sacrifice and public service.

Ingraham says liberals are taking a single satirical comment out of context "to paint Meghan as the victim of a right-wing hate crime" and "malign outspoken conservatives."

The radio host mocked McCain on her show last week over comments urging Republicans to seek compromise with Democrats. She referred to McCain “a Valley Girl gone awry” and a “plus-sized model.”

Ingraham calls the furor over her remark "manufactured and totally phony."

"This comes from the same playbook responsible for the ongoing demonization of Rush Limbaugh," she writes.

"If any off-the-cuff remark about a woman's size was condemnable, then where was the outrage when President Obama made a passing reference to Jessica Simpson's 'weight battle' during his Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer?" she asked, referring to a headline the president noted on a magazine cover during his interview with the NBC anchor.

Ingraham pointed to digs Rush Limbaugh has gotten over his weight, and references to herself and Ann Coulter as "peroxide blondes."

"I laughed it off. If you can't stand the heat…get out of the punditry business," she writes. "Next time, just for fun, Meghan should pretend that she's had a change of heart and is now a pro-life conservative. Then she'll really see how the Mean Girls treatment feels."

Meghan McCain has taken aim at both Ingraham and Coulter over the past week during a media blitz that's included blog posts and appearances on network television.
On The View yesterday, she said she felt like model Tyra Banks, who “went on her show in her bathing suit and said, ‘Kiss my fat ass.’”

“That’s what I feel right now,” McCain said. “I’m like, ‘Kiss my fat ass!’”

FINANCIAL GOOD NEWS: Roche Buys Genentech For $46.8 Billion

With all the negative news lately, it's nice to see news like this that appears to be good news for both parties involved. From CNNMoney.com:

Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG (ROG.VX) said Thursday it sealed a friendly deal with Genentech Inc. (DNA) to buy the 44% of the U.S. biotech company that it doesn't already own for around $46.8 billion, after raising the offer price to $95 a share.

Roche, based in Basel, said it expects the transaction to be accretive to earnings in the first year after closing. Roche already has the financing for the deal in place after it successfully placed a number of bond offerings in various currencies, raising nearly $40 billion in the process.

The agreement ends a nearly eight-month battle, in which Genentech repeatedly rejected Roche's offer.

Last Friday, Roche increased the offer price to $93 a share. The higher offer brought Genentech's independent board of directors to the table, with intense merger talks starting Saturday, Roche Chairman Franz Humer told reporters on a conference call Thursday.

The agreement finally reached is for a slightly higher price of $95 a share. Roche will amend its existing tender offer to reflect the increased price. The expiration date for the offer is March 25.

"We believe this is a fair offer for Genentech shareholders," said Charles Sanders, chairman of a special committee of independent Genentech board members in a statement. "We look forward to working with Roche to complete the transaction as expeditiously as possible."

KELLY CLARKSON VIDEO: Is Kelly Clarkson Pregnant Or Just A Very Talented BBW

Did you see Kelly Clarkson perform her new single My Life Would Suck Without You (MP3) last night on American Idol Season 8? If you didn't, you can watch her performance below. What you'll notice is she's definitely gained quite a bit of weight since the last time she appeared live on TV.

So, it was inevitable that the gossip going around the net was that she was pregnant. I don't think this is the case though. Kelly's always battled with her weight, and it appears now that she's comfortable being a little BBW. That's a Big Beautiful Woman for those who don't know what BBW stands for. (You can read more about BBW's here). What do you think?

P.S. Congratulations Anoop! The margin was thin, but you made it through...

CNN Commentary By Ed Rollins - Slow down, Mr. President

While going through my morning ritual of checking all the major news sites for articles I feel you might be interested in, I came across a commentary piece on CNN.com. It caught my attention because of the headline: Commentary: Slow down, Mr. President.

This caught my attention more than anything because it was on CNN, and not Fox. The article was written by Ed Rollins, who is a Republican strategist who was President Reagan's political director and was national chairman of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign.

Mr. Rollins' chief point of his commentary is a good one. While President Obama was patient and showed great stamina in defeating both Hilary Clinton and then John McCain in the general election, should he now be a sprinter rather than a marathoner as he was before getting into the Oval Office. Here is a little taste of Ed's commentary. You can read the entire article over at CNN.com.

President Obama showed a marathoner's pace when he took on the Democratic establishment and defeated Hillary Clinton in the long primary season campaign and still had enough left to finish off a tired John McCain in the general election. He was disciplined and executed the long-distance runner's strategy perfectly.

However, the new president has now become a sprinter, racing out of the blocks full speed ahead! A sprinter doesn't have to pace himself. He just uses every ounce of energy, power and speed to get himself to the finish line in the fastest time.

We know the president is running fast. He and the Congress have spent more money in a shorter period of time than ever in our history. And Congress seldom moves fast

The problem we have is, we don't know after 50-plus days in office what the distance of the race is and what's the level of the president's pace or his endurance.

This is still a man we don't know. He gives the appearance of being cool under fire. We know he is smart, and we know he can give a good speech. Pollsters tell us the public likes him. Every president since Eisenhower has been liked at this stage of the game. But liking the man doesn't mean you like his policies.

We also don't know if he is a decision-maker. Can he prioritize? To date, he has been a man of motion. He has by the stroke of a pen -- through executive orders -- undone a lot of the Bush agenda, the same tactic Bush used to undo the Clinton agenda. That's his prerogative.

But the critical question is whether the president is in a fight or flight mode. Is he running fast because he is scared and thinks today's crisis necessitates immediate action, including reckless spending? Or, as I suspect, he is in a fight mode, and the fight is to change the course of this country toward bigger government and solving all problems at the federal level. If it's the latter, then I am very concerned, and every taxpayer should be, too.

What are your thoughts on President Obama's first 50 days or so in office?

VIDEO: Deranged Gunman Goes On Shooting Spree In Samson Alabama

This story hits way, way too close to home for me. My mother was born in Geneva, AL, and my uncle and two nephews live in Geneva and Samson respectively. Here's the story from the DothanEagle.com:

Hell came to Samson Tuesday in the form of a deranged gunman whose killing spree left 10 victims dead before he turned a gun on himself.

The gunman, identified by eyewitnesses and a former high school classmate as Michael McLendon, 27, began his mad, violent rampage in Kinston, where one victim was found dead in a burned house, according to authorities.

McLendon then went to Samson where he rampaged through a neighborhood, killing four adults and a 1-year-old child at one residence, and two other people at nearby homes. A 3-month-old infant was also injured in the shootings.

He then went on a random shooting spree through Samson, shooting and killing a woman at a Big Little store on State Highway 52 and another victim at Samson Pipe and Supply.

McLendon also opened fire on Bradley TrueValue Hardware store. Luckily, no one was injured.

“We were just business as normal and all of a sudden there were bullets flying and glass was everywhere,” owner David Bradley said. “We realized what it was and grabbed our guns but then he was gone.”

After McLendon left Samson he fled to Geneva, where he encountered law enforcement officers. Geneva County deputies rammed the suspect’s Mitsubishi Eclipse in front of Alabama Title Loans on State Highway 52, near Wal-Mart.

Gunfire was exchanged and Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey was shot in the shoulder, though his wound was not serious. A chase then continued to Reliable Products where McLendon took his own life.

The children and one of the adults were the family of a Geneva County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The deputy was one of the officers who pursued McLendon to Reliable.

“This is probably the worst thing that’s happened in my career,” Sheriff Greg Ward said. “...While the shootout was going on at Reliable, he had no idea what had happened to his family.”

Here's CNN's Anderson Cooper talking with Alabama State Troopers about the tragedy:

BREAKING NEWS: Georgia High School Teacher Splashed In Face With Acid

This story is just now breaking. A high school teacher was splashed in the face with sulfuric acid. The effects can be devastating if not treated immediately. Pictured to the right is Ameneh Bahrami of Iran who was blinded by a man who threw acid in her face. (Read about Ameneh's ordeal at the WashingtonPost.com).

Here are the details straight from CBSAtlanta.com:

Crews are working to clean up a sulfuric acid spill at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Cobb County.

Kennesaw police public information officer Scott Luther told CBS Atlanta that a small amount of the acid spilled and splashed onto a teacher's face and eyes in a science lab. The teacher, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately available.

Several students were treated as a precaution, officials said.

Several portions of the school were evacuated. Students were seen gathered outside the school.

Bizarre Story of the Day:

If I hadn't researched this on the web, I would've never believed that this was real. But, it is, and it's a sad and bizarre story. Oxana is a Feral Child. What are Feral Children? Here's the definition from FeralChildren.com:

Feral children, also known as wild children or wolf children, are children who've grown up with minimal human contact, or even none at all. They may have been raised by animals (often wolves) or somehow survived on their own. In some cases, children are confined and denied normal social interaction with other people.

**UPDATE - 7-17-09**

Three Arrested in BMW Heiress Blackmail Attempt

Germany's richest woman and a 12.5% owner of BMW, Susanne Klatten turned the tables on The Swiss Gigolo, Helg Sgarbi after he had bilked her for millions of dollars. Klatten's ordeal was more Hollywood-like than real-life, and it's a sharp reminder of how creative scam artists can be. Here's the beginning of this story from Time.com:

Banks, cheese, chocolate. The Swiss are famous for many things, but their prowess at sexual conquests usually isn't one of them. That makes the exploits of Helg Sgarbi, née Russak, even more exceptional. The 44-year-old former banker, handsome, tall and well mannered, has shown a remarkable talent in the field of effective affection. In the four cases that have become public, the "Swiss Gigolo," as Sgarbi is now known, managed to collect an impressive $11.8 million from women that fell for him.

But his luck ran out in a German court Monday, when Sgarbi was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud, attempted fraud and attempted blackmail. Sgarbi confessed that not only did he dine, bewitch and bed a number of married women, but tricked them into paying him to keep quiet. In two cases, he confessed, he used blackmail to extract money. (Read: "The Royal Blackmail Mystery")

Sgarbi's undoing was Germany's wealthiest woman, industrialist and philanthropist Susanne Klatten. Having already received $8.84 million from Klatten, who owns 12.5% of German carmaker BMW and a majority of chemical firm Altana, and is a married mother of three, Sgarbi tried to blackmail her with a secretly filmed video showing the couple in bed. But instead of sending him the negotiated $17.7 million (down from the $366 million police say he asked for), Klatten sent the police.

PHOTO: Chinese Vessels "Harass" U.S. Navy's USNS Impeccable

Chinese ships and planes have been getting very aggressive lately. The latest incident happened to the USNS Impeccable (pictured at left). Here's the scoop from Bloomberg.com:

Five Chinese vessels in a possibly coordinated effort yesterday “shadowed and aggressively maneuvered in dangerously close proximity” to a U.S. Navy ocean surveillance ship as it conducted routine operations in international waters, the Pentagon said today.

Two of the vessels closed to within 50 feet (15 meters) of the USNS Impeccable, waving Chinese flags and telling the U.S. ship to leave the area, according to a Defense Department statement. The Impeccable sprayed its fire hoses at one of the boats in order to protect itself.

The incident took place eight days after the U.S. and China agreed to resume military exchanges after China in October froze some contact to protest arms sales to Taiwan.

The U.S. Embassy lodged a protest during the weekend with Chinese officials over the incident, State Department spokesman Robert Wood said today.

"We felt that our vessel was inappropriately harassed," Wood told reporters in Washington.

Yesterday’s encounter took place in international waters in the South China Sea, about 75 miles south of Hainan Island, and included a Chinese Navy intelligence ship, the Pentagon said. The incident was preceded by days of increasingly aggressive conduct by Chinese vessels, the Defense Department said.

Illinois Pastor Fred Winters Used His Bible To Deflect Gunman's Bullets

This is a sad and bizarre story. An Illinois pastor named Fred Winters was gunned down earlier today while he was preaching. He tried to deflect the gunman's bullets with the Bible he was reading from, but he was fatally wounded when one of the bullets struck him in the chest. From FoxNews.com:

An Illinois pastor was shot and killed, and two parishioners injured after an unknown gunman opened fire during Sunday services at the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill.

A gunman walked down the church aisle and briefly spoke to the pastor before shooting during the 8:15 a.m service. Rev. Fred Winters used the Bible he was reading from to shield himself from the first round of bullets being pumped at him, a parishioner told FOX News.

The gunman's .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol jammed after the fourth shot was fired. The suspect then started stabbing himself with a four-inch knife, Ralph Timmins of the Illinois State Police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Timmins said the gunman slashed two parishioners when they tried to subdue him. Continue reading on FoxNews.com.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Nick Schuyler Found Clinging To Overturned Boat - Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper Still Missing

USAToday.com has ongoing updates on this situation. As of right now, Nick Schuyler is the only one of the four men who were on the fishing trip that has been found. Nick was found by the Coast Guard clinging to the overturned boat. Here are the latest updates from USAToday.com:

Update, 2:21 p.m. ET: Stu Schuyler, Nick's father, said he spoke with his son and that he had been in the water since Saturday afternoon. The rescued boater is in serious but stable condition. "He looks OK," Stu Schuyler said. "He's got a few cuts and bruises. His temperature is not that far from normal."

Update, 2:25 p.m. ET: Schuyler's mother, Marcia Schuyler, said her son told her he was thinking of her while he was stranded at sea. "'Mom, I kept saying you're not going to go to my funeral' " she said her son told her. "That's what kept him hanging on."

Update, 3:21 p.m. ET: Capt. Timothy Close said his officers have spoken with Nick Schuyler at the hospital, and much of what they learn from him will affect the search for the other three men. He said the search team is using computer models to estimate where the missing men may have drifted to, but that Schuyler's input will help the search. He could not confirm Ray Sanchez's statement that the missing boaters were together after the boat flipped on Saturday.

BREAKING NEWS: Detroit Lions Star Corey Smith and Oakland Raiders' Marquis Cooper Missing At Sea

Corey Smith (pictured here), a defensive end for the Detroit Lions and Marquis Cooper, a linebacker with the Oakland Raiders are missing at sea along with two other men. Here's the breaking news from FoxNews.com:

Smith, a defensive end for the Detroit Lions, and Cooper, an Oakland Raiders linebacker, were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass for a fishing trip Saturday morning and did not return as expected, the Coast Guard said Sunday. Crews used a helicopter and an 87-foot ship to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass, but poor weather made the search difficult. Officials did not receive a distress signal from the missing craft.

Cooper owns the boat and he and Smith have been on fishing trips before, said Ron Del Duca, Smith's agent. The pair had been teammates on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. Two others were aboard: Will Bleakley and Nick Schuyler, both former University of South Florida players.

Coast Guard Capt. Timothy M. Close said the weather early Saturday had been fair, but worsened toward the evening as a front moved in. The National Weather Service said seas were about 2 to 4 feet Saturday morning and increased to 3 to 5 feet in the afternoon. Late Saturday night, a small craft advisory was issued, when winds were around 20 knots and seas were up to 7 feet or more. There were no thunderstorms in the area. Continue reading...

Ummm... Okay. I don't have kids, so maybe this is normal, but doesn't this seem a little too much. I've seen parents swing their babies around by both arms a little, but this guy is treating his kid like a ragdoll. The baby doesn't seem to mind, but then again, most babies wouldn't mind you hanging them over the balcony like Michael Jackson did, but that doesn't make it okay. What do you think?

Octo-Mommy Suleman Turns Down Free Child Care Because She Wants To Be A Celebrity

I told myself a while back that I was not going to give this woman any more press, and then she goes and does something as stupid as this: Nadya Suleman turned down 24 hour a day childcare for a year! Why? Because she would only accept it If it was in conjunction with a reality TV show. If anyone had any thoughts that this woman was looking out for the best interests of her kids, then this ought to be an eye-opener. Here are more details from The Daily Dish on LATimes.com:

What? No reality TV show? Then Nadya Suleman doesn’t need your stinking free 24-hour child care.

The Octomom — mother of 14 IVF conceived children — has officially passed on an offer of free 24-hour nursing care for her kids by the nonprofit group Angels in Waiting.

AP reports that the group’s founder said that Suleman seemed to lose interest in their offer after they ruled out her request to do a reality show around her childrens' care.

Angels in Waiting lawyer Gloria Allred said she filed a request for an investigation with Los Angeles County Child and Family Services into how Suleman will care for her children.

In case you have forgotten — and seriously, how could you — Suleman is unmarried, unemployed, lives with her parents (whose house now faces foreclosure) and receives food stamps and other government assistance. Continue reading...

Today is Texas Independence Day

For those of us who don't live in Texas, this is just another day, but if you live in the lone star state, today is your Independence Day. Here's more from The Daily Texan:

As Texans across the state prepared to hoist their “Come and Take It” flags and crack open a can of Lone Star beer today in celebration of Texas Independence Day, Austin’s French Legation Museum celebrated the state’s historic past with a little more sobriety than most would expect.

Located one block East of I-35 between 8th and 9th streets, the museum’s 22-acre property held a weekend celebration for Texas Independence Day, showcasing local musicians, East Austin artwork and a variety of historical documentaries.

“We wanted to celebrate Texas Independence Day, not with barbecue and beer, but in a way that relates to the city of Austin,” said Aimee Garten, the museum’s programs coordinator. “We want to make sure people don’t forget about Texas history.”

The museum is the perfect spot to celebrate Texas’ historic past, Garten said. Built between 1840 and 1841, four years after Texas declared its independence from Mexico, the museum’s main building stands as the oldest frame house in Austin, and tours are offered through its fully furnished interior. Congratulations to Venus Williams for winning the Abierto Mexicano tennis tournament in Acapulco today. Venus took just over an hour to demolish Flavia Pennetta 6-1, 6-2 in the final. Here's an excerpt from SonyEricssonWTATour.com:

It was the dream final everyone was waiting for, but while one of the two played fine the other one played out of this world, as Venus Williams routed Flavia Pennetta for her 41st career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title at the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presented by HSBC.

From the start of the week, Williams and Pennetta were heavy favorites to reach the final, but neither of them had a smooth ride. Williams was pushed to three sets in her first three matches of the week, although she did pull off a 60 63 semifinal win over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova; three of Pennetta's pre-final victories ended in straight sets, but she was almost bundled out in the quarterfinals, rallying from 62 20 down to beat Petra Cetkovska, 26 63 60.

It could be argued that Pennetta held a mental edge over Williams going into the final, as she had won three of their five previous meetings. And those wins had come consecutively - at Bangkok in 2007 then Roland Garros and Moscow in 2008 - making her one of only seven players ever to pull off the hat-trick on Williams (and the other six to pull it off are all former world No.1s or world No.2s).

Williams was all over Pennetta in the final, though. Her serve was on fire (she lost just 13 points in her eight service games, five of those coming from double faults) and she was devastating on the return too (breaking Pennetta four out of seven times). The much-hyped final was over in only an hour and two minutes, 61 62.

Video Of 15-Year Old Girl Being Attacked In Police Station By Deputy Paul Schene

Without audio, it's always hard to draw a conclusion from video, but it definitely appears that deputy Paul Schene of Washington state's King County police department assaulted a woman who was in custody. It looks like the woman agitated Schene when she shoved her shoe at him, and according to this video, started calling Schene and his partner fat pigs, etc. Here is the video for you to judge for yourself:
